My Journey into Coaching: Finding Joy in Youth Football

Coach Steve Gill | Doveridge Football Club

My coaching journey began in a way I hadn’t anticipated by being invited to manage my daughter’s football team. She was just six years old at the time, taking the step up to join the DGLL under-8 girls league. Watching her progress from Doveridge Football Club’s tots sessions into the under-8 side was an incredible opportunity for both of us.
Doveridge is a fantastic setup, offering children not only the chance to play football but also to build friendships and feel part of a community. The sense of belonging and involvement is incredibly rewarding not just for me, but for all the children and families in the local area. Choosing to manage the team has been one of the most positive decisions I’ve made.
Admittedly, even after years of playing and watching football, I felt a bit uncertain at first about coaching such young children. But the encouragement from fellow coaches, the support of parents, and, above all, the enthusiasm and spirit of the kids themselves, soon helped us find a rhythm organising regular training sessions and playing matches.
These kids are truly wonderful little people. They shine both on and off the pitch, spreading positivity to their parents, teammates, and everyone around them. Match day on Saturdays has become my favourite part of the week. Their commitment and energy are inspiring, and looking back, my first season as manager remains the most enjoyable season I’ve had in football.
While winning is always a nice bonus, the real joy comes from seeing the kids develop their football skills, grow in confidence, and do something they genuinely love. Coaching them has been a deeply rewarding experience, and it’s a reminder that sometimes, the best moments in football aren’t just about the game they’re about the people you share it with.
